The Sorcerers’ Apprentice Story: Once, a young boy named Franz worked as an apprentice to a sorcerer. Every day, the sorcerer gave Franz a long list of chores while he went off to his workshop or traveled to nearby villages. But Franz wanted to learn magic. He knew the sorcerer kept a spell book in his workshop, and he longed to read it. So he decided to sneak a peek when the sorcerer was out.
One day, as the sorcerer was leaving the castle, he told Franz to clean the floor of the Great Hall.
“Fetch water from the well with this bucket, then carry it to the big stone container in the hall,” he said. “When the container is full, scrub the floor with this broom.”
As soon as the sorcerer left, Franz rushed to the spell book. He found a spell that could bring objects to life.
“This broom could clean the floor by itself!” he thought excitedly.
Franz chanted the spell, and the broom suddenly sprouted little arms and started moving on its own. It carried the bucket to the well and filled the container with water.
But soon, Franz noticed that the container was overflowing and water was all over the floor.
“Stop!” he shouted, but the broom kept going. Panicking, Franz grabbed an ax and chopped the broom into small pieces. But the pieces grew arms too, and soon there were many brooms.
The sorcerer returned just as the water was reaching Franz’s knees.
“Please forgive me, master,” Franz cried. “I just wanted to try magic.”
The sorcerer was angry. He chanted a spell, and all the brooms and water vanished.
“You have much to learn,” the sorcerer said sternly.
“I promise to work very hard,” Franz replied.
“Very well,” said the sorcerer. “You can start by cleaning this floor—the old-fashioned way!”
Moral: “Learning and using power responsibly is important. Sometimes, it’s better to ask for help and follow instructions carefully.”
