The Princess: Once upon a time, the ruler of Kishanagar, Rajendra, was very strong and brave. He was a good king who cared a lot about his people and always did what was right. His subjects were happy and content. Rajendra’s queen, Prema, gave birth to a beautiful daughter named Sona.
Being an only child, Sona enjoyed a lot of freedom and was brought up like a boy. She grew up smart not only in studies but also in using the bow and arrow and sword. She learned how to defend herself. When she reached the age for marriage, her parents began looking for a suitable husband for her.
But Sona disagreed with their plan. She told her parents, “Dear Father, I want my husband to be someone who is highly skilled in fighting and can overpower me in a fight. Suppose our kingdom faces an enemy in the future, he should be able to fight and defeat them in war. If you agree to this condition, you may make an announcement.”
The king and queen were very proud of their daughter’s thoughts. They made the announcement in Kishanagar and in the neighboring kingdoms. Thinking that Sona was just a girl, many suitors came forward to accept her challenge. They also knew that since Sona was the only heir, they would have complete control over the kingdom once they married her.
But when the suitors met Sona face to face, they realized it was not easy to defeat her. Each one of them was defeated by Sona and had to go back disappointed. She was taking on suitors one after another. Among them was Udayavarma, the prince of Chandanghar.
Udayavarma watched the fight every day, joining the crowd. However, he wasn’t participating in the fight; he was observing and learning how the princess fought and the different strategies she used against each prince. One day, he could not control himself when he saw a particular way she used the sword. He got up and shouted, “Bravo!” in appreciation.
Sona turned to look at him, wondering who could understand the details of her fighting style. But in the large crowd, she only caught a glimpse of him. By now, Udayavarma had learned all her strategies, and the next day, he was ready to fight her. The two fought cleverly and fiercely. Neither was prepared to surrender. During the fight, Sona tried all her tricks, but Udayavarma met every one of them. She soon discovered he was a good swordsman and would not be easily defeated. Finally, Sona was defeated by Udayavarma. She stopped the fight and joined her parents.
Cheers rose from the audience who had been eagerly watching. When Udayavarma came forward to present himself to the king and queen, Sona recognized him as the one who had cheered her. She asked Udayavarma, and he confessed it was him.
Sona then said to him, “My condition was that I would marry anyone who would defeat me in the contest. Though you’ve defeated me, I can’t marry you. You can find out the reason yourself.”
Udayavarma thought for a while and said, “Yes, you are right, Princess. I should not marry you.” He bowed to her and left the palace.
The king and queen were surprised at their daughter’s decision. According to her contest, Sona insisted she would marry the man who defeated her, and Udayavarma had achieved it. But now she was not ready to marry him, and Udayavarma also accepted her decision. They couldn’t understand why.
Now the Question: Sona was proud of her skills and announced she would marry whoever defeated her, didn’t she? She became more arrogant with each victory. Then came Udayavarma, who overpowered her. Why did she say he didn’t deserve her hand in marriage despite his victory? Was it her arrogance? If you know the answers, speak out.
Ans: Sona was not arrogant. She agreed that Udayavarma defeated her in sword-fighting but didn’t keep her word. That’s true, but this doesn’t make her arrogant. If we think deeply, we can understand her reason. Sona was not willing to accept the relationship for marriage because Udayavarma learned from her like a student learns from a teacher. And a teacher cannot marry their student.
It’s universally accepted that one’s father, mother, and teacher are like gods. Sona realized that Udayavarma was her first student and then a suitor. Udayavarma too understood this and decided not to claim her hand. The relationship between a teacher and a student is more sacred than others. That’s why Sona went back on her condition.”
