Goddess’s Blessing: In the old city of Bardwan, there was a brave warrior named Rajeshwar. He was famous for his courage and skills. Rajeshwar started as a simple soldier but worked very hard and became the leader of the army. Unlike other leaders who relaxed once they reached a high position, Rajeshwar always tried to make things better. He made many changes to improve the army.
Rajeshwar didn’t follow old rules written by scholars. He used his own experience and wisdom. He changed the way his soldiers fought, choosing the best places to fight and making sure they had enough supplies while cutting off the enemy’s supplies. He made the soldiers’ bows better and changed the handles of their swords so they were easier to hold. He also trained a special group of soldiers to use fire arrows, which helped him win many battles.
Rajeshwar noticed that the army was full of old officers who couldn’t fight well anymore. He gave them pensions and sent them home. He promoted younger soldiers who showed talent and bravery. He only gave medals to those who truly deserved them, making the rewards more valuable.
One day, Rajeshwar heard a noise outside his gate. When he asked about it, his porter said that many people were seeking work. Among them was a Rajput warrior named Arjun, who wanted a job. Rajeshwar asked to see him.
When Arjun entered, he claimed to be very skilled with weapons. Rajeshwar, skeptical, asked Arjun to prove it. Arjun performed a difficult sword trick, cutting a tiny piece of his own fingernail without drawing blood. Impressed, Rajeshwar took Arjun to King Rupsen and recommended him for a job.
King Rupsen asked Arjun how much he wanted to be paid. Arjun boldly asked for a thousand ounces of gold daily. The king was surprised and asked if Arjun had an army. Arjun replied that he only had his wife, son, daughter, and himself.
The king, curious about Arjun’s high demand, decided to give him the money. Arjun used the gold wisely. He gave half to priests and the poor, used some for his family, and saved some. Every night, he guarded the king’s bed with his sword.
One night, the king heard a woman’s cry from a cemetery and sent Arjun to investigate. Disguised in black, the king followed him. At the cemetery, Arjun saw a beautiful woman, Raj-Lakshmi, crying. She said she was the Royal Luck and that the king would die in a month unless a great sacrifice was made.
Raj-Lakshmi told Arjun to offer his son’s head to the goddess Devi to save the king. Arjun, without hesitation, decided to do it. He took his wife and children to the temple. His wife agreed to the sacrifice, believing in the importance of loyalty to their master. Their son, too, accepted his fate, wanting to help the king.
At the temple, Arjun beheaded his son. Overcome with grief, his daughter and wife also took their own lives. Arjun, seeing his family dead, killed himself too. The king, witnessing this, felt deep sorrow and guilt. He was about to kill himself when the goddess Devi appeared and stopped him. She offered to grant him a wish.
The king wished for Arjun and his family to be brought back to life. Devi used her magic to revive them all. The king was so grateful that he shared his throne with Arjun.
Now the question is: Why did Arjun and his family agree to sacrifice themselves?
Ans: They wanted to save the king’s life and believed in loyalty and duty to their master.
