Story Hansel and Gretel Story: Once upon a time, in a small village by a big forest, there lived a poor woodcutter with his two children, Hansel and Gretel. Hansel was the older brother, and Gretel was his little sister. Their mother had passed away many years ago, and now they lived with their stepmother. The family was very poor, and there was often not enough food to eat.
One day, during a harsh winter, the stepmother said to the woodcutter, “We do not have enough food for all of us. If we don’t do something, we will all starve. Take the children into the forest and leave them there. They will not find their way back, and we will have more food for ourselves.”
The woodcutter was a kind man and loved his children. He said, “No! I cannot leave Hansel and Gretel alone in the forest. Wild animals will eat them!” But the stepmother kept insisting until he finally agreed. The poor man was very sad but felt he had no other choice.
Hansel’s Clever Plan
That night, Hansel overheard the plan. He comforted Gretel, who was crying. “Don’t worry, Gretel. I will think of something,” he said. When everyone was asleep, Hansel sneaked outside. The moon was shining brightly, and Hansel saw shiny white pebbles on the ground. He filled his pockets with as many pebbles as he could and quietly returned to bed.
The next morning, the stepmother woke the children early. She gave them each a small piece of bread. “This is all you will have for the day,” she said. Then, she and the woodcutter took Hansel and Gretel deep into the forest. As they walked, Hansel dropped the white pebbles one by one along the path.
When they reached the middle of the forest, the stepmother said, “Stay here, children. Your father and I will come back to get you.” But Hansel and Gretel waited for hours, and no one came. Gretel started crying. “Don’t cry, Gretel,” said Hansel. “I know the way back home.”
When the moon rose, the white pebbles began to shine like tiny stars. Hansel and Gretel followed the trail of pebbles and safely returned home. Their father was overjoyed to see them, but the stepmother was angry.
The Second Plan
A few days later, the stepmother said to the woodcutter, “There is still not enough food. You must take the children deeper into the forest this time.” The woodcutter felt very sad, but again, he agreed.
Hansel tried to collect more pebbles that night, but the stepmother had locked the door. He couldn’t get out. “Don’t worry, Gretel,” he whispered. “I have another plan.”
The next morning, the stepmother gave them another small piece of bread. As they walked into the forest, Hansel crumbled his bread and dropped the crumbs along the path. “This will help us find our way back,” he thought.
The parents left them alone in the forest again. Hansel and Gretel waited until nightfall. But when they looked for the breadcrumbs, they couldn’t find them. Birds had eaten all the crumbs!
Gretel began to cry. “What will we do now?” she asked.
“Don’t worry, Gretel. We will find a way,” Hansel said, but deep down, he was worried too.
The Candy House
Hansel and Gretel wandered in the forest for a long time. They were tired and hungry. Just when they thought they couldn’t walk anymore, they saw something amazing. In the distance, there was a house made entirely of candy! The walls were made of gingerbread, the roof was covered with icing, and the windows were made of sugar.
“Look, Gretel!” Hansel said. “A house made of candy! Let’s eat it.”
The children ran to the house and began to eat. Hansel broke off a piece of the roof, and Gretel nibbled on a sugar window. They were so hungry that they didn’t notice someone watching them.
Suddenly, the door opened, and a kind-looking old woman came out. “Oh, my dear children,” she said. “You must be hungry. Come inside and eat as much as you like.”
Hansel and Gretel followed the old woman into the house. Inside, the table was filled with delicious food: cakes, pies, fruits, and chocolates. The children ate until they were full. Then, the old woman showed them two cozy beds. Hansel and Gretel fell asleep, feeling happy and safe.
The Wicked Witch
But the old woman was not kind at all. She was a wicked witch who used the candy house to trap children. When Hansel and Gretel woke up, everything changed. The witch grabbed Hansel and locked him in a cage. “You will stay here until you are fat enough to eat!” she cackled.
She made Gretel her servant. “Cook and clean for me,” the witch ordered. “And don’t even think about escaping, or I will eat you too!”
Hansel and Gretel were terrified, but they didn’t lose hope. Every day, the witch gave Hansel lots of food to make him fat. But Hansel was clever. Instead of showing the witch his finger when she checked if he was ready to eat, he showed her a thin bone. The witch had poor eyesight and thought Hansel was still too thin.
The Escape
After weeks of waiting, the witch grew impatient. “Fat or thin, I will eat you today!” she said. She ordered Gretel to heat the oven. “I am going to bake some bread first,” the witch said. “Climb inside and check if the oven is hot enough.”
But Gretel was clever too. She pretended not to understand. “How do I check the oven?” she asked. “Can you show me?”
The witch grumbled and leaned into the oven to show Gretel. Quick as a flash, Gretel pushed the witch inside and slammed the door shut. The witch screamed, but Gretel didn’t open the door. The wicked witch was gone for good.
Gretel ran to Hansel and unlocked the cage. “We are free, Hansel!” she cried. They hugged each other tightly.
The Treasure
Before leaving the house, the children found a chest filled with gold and jewels. “This will help us and Father,” said Hansel. They filled their pockets and began their journey home.
Returning Home
The journey back was long, but Hansel and Gretel were determined. They followed the stream and the familiar landmarks they had seen before. Along the way, they talked about how happy their father would be to see them.
After many days, they finally reached their house. Their father was outside, chopping wood. When he saw Hansel and Gretel, he dropped his axe and ran to them. “My dear children! You are alive!” I missed you so much! he cried, hugging them tightly.
Hansel and Gretel showed their father the treasure. “We will never be poor or hungry again,” said Gretel.
The stepmother was no longer there. She had left the house, and the woodcutter had been living alone, filled with regret for what had happened.
From that day on, Hansel, Gretel, and their father lived happily together. They had plenty of food, a warm home, and no more worries.
