Ratnaavatee’s Affair- Once upon a time, there was a rich man named Gunvant who lived in Avanteepur. He was very religious. Gunvant’s wife was very beautiful but also very wicked. She had a daughter named Ratnaavatee, who was more beautiful than her mother because she was born from another man. Ratnaavatee grew up to be just like her mother.
When Ratnaavatee became old enough to marry, Gunvant started looking for a suitable boy for her. However, Ratnaavatee had a secret relationship with her servant. When Gunvant found out, he fired the servant, who then moved to another place.
Despite this, Ratnaavatee continued to see the servant, sneaking out at night while only her mother knew about the affair. Gunvant eventually found a good match for Ratnaavatee and married her off. But Ratnaavatee could not end her relationship with her servant. She took her maid into confidence, and the maid helped Ratnaavatee visit the servant secretly at night.
Eventually, Ratnaavatee’s husband discovered the affair and fired the maid, making it difficult for Ratnaavatee to meet her lover. One night, she found an opportunity to visit him and shared her troubles. The servant advised her to wait until things calmed down. However, Ratnaavatee’s husband knew about their secret meetings and managed to poison the servant’s food. The servant ate the poisoned food, fell asleep, and died.
That same night, Ratnaavatee went to meet her lover. A thief saw her, adorned with jewelry, and decided to follow her. When she entered the servant’s house, the thief watched from hiding. A ghost living in a nearby tree also saw Ratnaavatee and fell in love with her. The Ghost decided to enter the dead servant’s body to be with Ratnaavatee.
Ratnaavatee met the servant, now possessed by the Ghost, and in his excitement, he bit her nose. After biting her, the Vaitaal left the servant’s body, but a part of Ratnaavatee’s nose remained in the dead body’s mouth.
Ratnaavatee cried in pain and saw that her lover was dead. Confused and scared, she ran away. The thief, still watching, got frightened but continued to follow her. Ratnaavatee returned to her home and cried outside her husband’s room, accusing him of biting her nose. Her husband and family woke up, but no one believed his explanations.
The matter was taken to the king’s court, where Ratnaavatee blamed her husband for her injury. The king, angry, ordered that Ratnaavatee’s husband be hanged. The thief, hearing this, went to the king and revealed everything he had seen. He told the king that a piece of Ratnaavatee’s nose could be found in the dead servant’s mouth.
The king sent his soldiers to check, and indeed, they found the piece of her nose in the servant’s mouth. The king released Ratnaavatee’s husband and expelled Ratnaavatee from the kingdom after shaving her head.
