How the Bear Lost His Tail: Once upon a time, Bear had a long tail, and Fox was very jealous of it.
“What makes Bear think his tail is so wonderful?” grumbled Fox as he looked at his own beautiful, russet-colored tail. “My tail is much nicer than his. I’m going to teach him a lesson.”
It was winter, and all the lakes were covered with thick ice. Fox made a hole in the ice and surrounded it with fat, tasty-looking fish. That evening, when Bear passed by, Fox dangled his tail through the hole into the water.
“What are you doing?” Bear asked.
“I am fishing,” Fox replied. “Would you like to try?”
Bear loved fish, so he was very eager to try.
“This is what you must do,” Fox explained. “Put your lovely long tail in the hole. Soon a fish will grab it, and then you can pull the fish out. In the meantime, you must be very patient and stay perfectly still.”
Bear was hungry and wanted to catch some fish, so he did exactly as Fox had told him.
The next morning, Fox went back to the lake and saw that Bear was lying on the ice. He was fast asleep and covered in snow. The hole had frozen over during the night, and now Bear’s tail was trapped in the ice.
Fox called out, “You’ve caught a fish! Quick! Pull out your tail!”
Bear woke up with a start and tugged his tail as hard as he could. All of a sudden, there was a loud CRACK! as Bear’s frozen tail snapped off.
And that is why bears now have very short tails and why they are definitely not friends with foxes.
The moral of the story is: “Jealousy and lying can lead to harm, not just to others, but also to oneself.”
